Hi Shannon, The current acceptable term for the decor is "threaded relief". Some years ago it was called "reverse etching" which really never made much sense to me. The other stein was probably made between 1900 and 1914 or the beginning of WWI. Because it is marked "GERMANY" it was made for export. John
