Shannon — I just got home after a weekend of hurricane watch duty and was able to get to my reference materials. It turns out that that John's second take (and Ron Gray's first) were correct. Your stein #448 shows up in an early Marzi & Remy catalog as a blank that took a variety of central PUG decorations. The catalog also shows it with an optional music box base.
Sorry about the earlier confusion. I would have bet money that the "A" on your stein was a partially obscured Thewalt mark. I guess that illustrates pretty well the danger of making judgments based on photographs, regardless of their quality and quantity.
For you other SteinTalk regulars out there, Ron and I have exchanged a couple of emails over the past 24 hours regarding the brown band at the top of the handle. I seem to recall seeing similar decoration on the handles of both Gerz and Thewalt steins, but Ron feels my recollections are probably the product of a faulty memory and that the brown handle tops are limited to M&R. Contributions aimed at resolving our debate would be welcomed. - fjl
