Timothy,
I don't think anyone will be able to tell you how your grandfather acquired the stein. As you already know, 1797 is a .5L etched stein with an inlay lid. It is described as "Four cards, gold coins on lid" and is given a mint condition value of approx. $750. About the only other thing that the stein itself might tell you is the actual year of manufacture. There may be a two digit number on the base (below and to the right of the 1797) which translates to the last two numbers of the year of manufacture. For example "98" would mean 1898 and "01" would mean 1901. However, all that means is that your grandfather could not have acquired it before that year. It doesn't say when it was purchased or exchanged hands.
