Ron Gray provided some additional information that explains the E&R relationship...

"Girmscheid did remake the 828 Monkey stein in the 1950s or 1960s. It appears in one of their catalogs that I have. The new and old one are both shown in The Beer Stein Library. The older one is taller because the base has a German verse on it. While the label Golden Crown E&R shows Germany on it, E&R is a U.S. importer and distributor of German steins. E&R stands for Ebeling & Reuss Co. of Devon (formerly Philadelphia), PA. I am not aware that they ever manufactured steins or owned molds for manufacture by others."

The Girmscheid of the 1950's & 1960's was a different owner than the Girmscheid from 1890's to about 1930. Some of the character steins are a little differences between some steins of the two periods.
