Hi Jeff, The 2428 Pewter lidded stein sounds like when it was purchased it was ordered with a more expensive pewter lid than the standard inlay with pewter ring. The other mettlach steins from your description have manufacturing flaws which is pretty common as these items were mass produced. The 3L bowling stein with the black spots on and around handle where pewter attaches may be from a pewter repair, would have to see it to make a better judgement.
