Very few factories actually put the capacity marks on the front. You will find many so called "Regensburg" steins with the capacity mark on the front, but only two of the factories can actually be identified as to who made which. The Fritz Thenn factory of Regensburg, if they put one on, always put their mark on the front from 1874 to 1886. The Freising factory that eventually became HR put their mark on the front only in their first year of operation, 1876. I have seen a couple of Reinhold Merkelbach piece so marked but they were founded only in 1882. Also, in the Hoehr Grenzhausen area there were many Eulerei, or small independent family operated kilns which turned out stoneware and may have placed the mark on the front, but almost all are unidentifiable. If you can provide a good photo of the mark, there is a chance the factory could be identified from that alone and if the factory can be identified an approximate time frame can be established.
