The use of the phrase "Hand Gemalt" is not required by law, standardized nor documented. However, it is a "modern" practice, much as the term "Limited edition". Used by some firms, it is intended to imply a certain quality and care in manufacturing which can only be obtained by hand operations. Although the machine age was well underway in by the early 1900's, the "norm" at that time was hand finishing, and if anything, products of the new technologies might be expected to brag that they were "made entirely by machine!"
