Trademarks can be helpful in dating steins, more so for some firms than for others. One perhaps obvious example is the "Gerzit" trademark which came into use around 1960. The earlier incised Gerz "stein inside a triangle" mark came into use around 1900, but it was used for many years. Sometimes the model number can be found in a catalog to indicate when it was first produced, but even then, all you know is that it can be no earlier than that date.
