The 1900 date comes from Gary Kirsner's Beer Stein Book and was a generalization. Gerz's use of a mark early on was somewhat spotty. We find Gerz steins with the incised mark that date to the 1880s. These early pieces have to be given approx. dates based on the style of their pewter attachments.
