Hi, John. Sometimes if a lid has been removed you can see a mark where the strap support was. I'm not sure exactly what causes this, but it is probably due to repeated light surface wear as the stein was cleaned - before the lid disappeared. Mugs that were intended to have lids had the anchor hole gouged into the topside of the handle. These are sometimes called "lidless steins" by collectors, indicating that a lid was the norm.
