I've heard a few thing about the frog-in-a-stein. I always thought it was just a little German humor -- like the fly-in-ice trick. Then I found a older news clipping that said it was a way of telling a tavern customer that he had had enough and this one would be his last. I haven't confirmed this to be authentic.
I have also been told by a very knowledgeable source that Thewalt made all of the frog-in-steins and that none of the frog-in-steins ever had a lid.
For a fact, I have seen some frog-in-steins that the stein body was not originally Thewalt. But, this is not to say that Thewalt did not purchase the mold or body at some later date and use it with a frog. Most the frogs appear to be the same, regardless of to whom I would attribute the body. Most of the bodies are not anything spectacular (and probably a little mundane) but the frog inside is a nice touch.
I recently purchased a frog-in-stein for my wife because she has a thing for frogs. I had it lidded because it just didn't seem right without one.
