open and closed rings

I recently purchased two blown glass steins on ebay advertised as dating from 1806 and 1812. But both have "open" rings implying that the lids are somewhat newer, perhaps 1870-80. Or maybe I have the oldest open rings on record! Anybody have any thoughts? Second, I also bought a glass stein with the german double eagle painted on it and the lid states that it is the first prize given on 2/11/1900 but

the club was founded in 1866. This has a closed ring! Am I correct in assumming that perhaps the club bought a bunch of these in the 1870-80 period and then put dates on them when they were awarded years later? Or do I have the oldest use of a closed ring on record?
