Thanks Walt and John for your prompt and informative responses. Unfortunately, I don't have the expertise yet the to send fotos. However, the "1806" stein has a similar shape to the one you (Walt) show in your article in the library: it balloons out in the middle and has a few "thumbprints". The inside of the handle is flat and seems to be attached in the manner suggested by John for oldeer steins. The lid has a painted picture of a sheppard with the engraving M 6 H which the seller (eBay Deutschland) claimed stands for 1806. The hinge has 5 rings. (The "1812" stein has straight sides (its actually 10 sided) slightly tapered from top to bottom. The lid is also painted with farm implements and the saying "An Gottes Segen ist Alles Gelegen" God's, blessing takes care of everything, (I think) The hinge has 3 rings and the engraving says 18 EF 12, which is where the seller got the "1812" date. Does this information give you any more clues? In the few months I've been watching the US and German eBays, reading Kirsner as well as the articles in the Beer Stein Library and the SCI library I've not seem anything similar.
