missing lids

There seem to be a fair number of steins for sale that are missing lids. One would think that there would be lots of lids for sale since steins can get broken, but why would anyone take the lid off of a stein unless the metal was being used for the war effort during WW1 or WW2? Does anyone out there have an answer? Also, what sort of a discount, in general, should a stein without a lid be priced at?
