David points out two legitimate reasons for why steins are found without lids, and from my own experience I add another. I dropped an SCI convention stein once, on carpet, and while the body was fine, the soft pewter lid was bent upon impact. Did you ever notice how many pewter lids have been "mashed" right at their highest point?
