John — When I saw that stein go up for sale on eBay I was similarly curious. As far as I'm able to tell from the eBay photographs, it's identical to #106 in the Beer Stein Library's M&R catalog (although perhaps less crisp). As you already know, #106 is part of a series that also includes numbers 101-105, all depicting scenes from the story of Trumpeter of Säckingen, so there's not much question about the accuracy of that number.
Since the scene in question ("Werner Meets the Baron") is fairly popular theme on German beer steins and often occurs more than once in the product line of a single manufacturer, my next (and final) step in trying to solve the conflict was to look in the M&R manufacturer's catalog for the period which, while containing a substantial number of 300 series products, did not list a mold number 320.
I have my doubts that M&R intentionally made a "lower quality" version of #106 and gave it another mold number. On the other hand, I really can't give you a reason for the eBay stein being marked "320" except to suggest that it wouldn't be the first time that a base mark was misleading.
Hope that helps. - fjl
