I was looking along my shelves last weekend, as one does, to note something that had been staring me in the face for sometime. Some of my steins are finished in a varying intensity of a coppery / gold finish on the rim and the base. i.e. a much reduced tone of the type that was popular in the latter half of the 20th C. My collection is mainly pre 1914 relief steins I assumed at first that the steins with the coppery finish must therefore be later. However, on investigation most of these steins have 3 ring hinges and are known to be early. Does anyone know when the coppery finish was introduced and which maker was the first.
I started another thread on 3/2/05 re identification, but as yet have had no replies from the thread. Somebody must have a few ideas on this one!
