The "heavy" designation had absolutely nothing to do with horses pulling heavy artillery. This was a "heavy cavalry" unit, heavy meaning that this unit used larger horses that were more suited for close combat, in contrast to "light cavalry" units, more often used for reconnoitering and the disruption of enemy activities behind the lines. Further, "heavy cavalry" regiments carried heavy swords, which again were more effective for close combat.

These stein are uncommon because they were rather expensive for the soldiers to purchase, costing four to seven weeks of their pay. Also, many of these steins were destroyed during the bombings during the second world war, so very few remain.

I know no way to check out the names, especially the more common names.
