Glenn, I'm assuming that 'Anaconda' refers to Anaconda Montana. For about 100 years starting in around 1870, Butte and its neighbor 25 miles to the west, Anaconda, became the largest copper mine and smelting center in the world. Largely due to Butte being proclaimed as "the richest hill on earth", Montana's population grew from 40,000 to 144,000 in the decade 1880-1890. This area had many mining disasters and large losses of life. It also became an environmental disaster and THE largest superfund site. I forgot the number, but the area also had many breweries around 1910. I think the number was about half that of big cities such as Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia which had in the 30-50 range. I have seen other steins listing Butte and Anaconda on them, all of them being pewter, as I remember, and being from that time period. Eric V.
