Mark,

Prior to 1899, the Roman numeral represented the relative size of the piece, with the largest being designated with the Roman numberal I. In 1899 it was changed so that the Roman numerals indicated the same size for all steins. Thus, I indicates 1,0 liter, II indicates 0,5 liter, III indicates 0,4 liter, IV indicates 0,3 liter and V indicates 0,25 liter. A 0 and 00 was used for form 1526 PUG, which indicates 2,0 liter and 3,0 liter, respectively. Since this stein was made in 1902, the Roman numeral II indicates it is a 0,5 liter stein. This is the same answer you gave, but the wording infers it was based on relative size rather than the absolute size.
