First I must confess to not being a stein collector. But as a collector of vintage blue & white salt glazed pottery it's inevitable that the beautiful work of the German potters draws your attention. My Grandson & I were at a garage sale today and found a blue & white (gray) salt glazed stein which I purchased for $4. The subject matter consists of a very well done rendering of the Indianapolis Soldiers & Sailors Monument on the front panel. The remaining 2 panels are what appear to be akin to crests with geometric & floral motifs. The pewter lid has many years worth of patina. The bottom has no markings and is slightly concave & rough to the touch. An inch below the rim there is a row of raised beads with lines running above & below it. At some point someone has painted over some areas with red paint, which is obviously on top of the glaze & easily removed. The only marking found is an impressed 0.5L near where the handle joins the body at the top. I have spent the last couple of hours researching this item to no avail. My question is: can anyone give me any information on maker, year and/or value? If nothing else it's worth the $4 to me just to add to my pottery collection. The fact that I'm from 15 miles south of Indy & have visited the Monument as a child & with my Grandson also gives it some sentimental value. The hour I spent just on your site has been very informative, the SteinTalk section in particular. Your membership are obviously quite serious and knowledgable which impressed me very much. Enclosed are a few photos of the stein. Thank you.
