Here's the best suggestion so far on the origin of the stein/mug. I'm just hoping to be able to ID the maker. This was posted on an Ebay forum last week when I posted the mark there for ID. QUOTE: The letters in front of the man's cap, "Don," refer to the river Don. From this, and the name of the river "Volga" on the woman's headdress, I deduce that this stein is a souvenir of the city of Volgograd, which stands at the confluence of the Volga and the Don. And, since Volgograd was named, for awhile, Stalingrad (it was Stalin's birthplace), I'd figure that the man on the stein is a highly idealized pic of ol' Joe Stalin.
Perhaps the stein came from Volgograd's Victory Museum, which celebrates the costly victory of the Russians over the Nazis in the year-long battle there. END QUOTE
