I have seen a few Navy steins like this in 35+ years - if you will notice there are no threads for a 'screw on' lid and the thumb lift is the standing sailor usually found on the lid. If you look at the winning bidder 'ME' you will see that he collects photos - I believe the reason it went so high was because of the photo under the glass & the Kaiser's yacht Hohenzollern - unusual to find a photo of a naval rating - just MHO
