I have traced the attribution of the initials RD to Rudy Dekker to Roland Henschen's The Stein Makers column of June 23, 1973. He does not provide a reference, but he discusses it alongside the initials KB being that of Karl Beuler. Roland obtained a lot of information from talking to the old potters of Hoehr-Grenzhausen, so we may never know where he obtained his information. Les Hopper wrote an article on RD in the March 1996 issue of Prosit. Les identified a lot of his steins as Girmscheid by the twisted vine handle. We now know that several firms had similar handles (see The Twisted Vine Handles Simplified in the Library of Pacific Stein Sammler under the Chapters section of this site). The handle he describes in the article seems to be like the one shown for Hanke in the Pacific Stein Sammler article. While Les only shows the front of the stein and does not cite a manufacturer's mark or number, I was able to find it in the Hanke catalog of The Beer Stein Library under form 1630. We will have to see if someone can come up with another stein with RD made by a firm other than Hanke or Gerz. If you are aware of other articles on Rudy Dekker, please let us know. Ron
