For someone like yourself, who's apparently not a collector, the following may sound pretty pedantic, but your photos raise an issue with a listing in the Beer Stein Library, which both Ron and Chris (below) have relied on in responding to your question. The problem is that, when referring back to a copy of the only available original manufacturer's catalog, M&R mold number 166 is applied to a completely different stein that depicts an ancient German warrior and a woman. Additionally, that same catalog would appear to indicate that the current Library listing of a stein similar to yours as mold #160 may be in error. Right now there doesn't seem to be any practical way to resolve these conflicts, but in order to gather as many facts as possible toward that end, it would be helpful to know the capacity of your stein (i.e., half-liter, one-liter, etc.), which is also a necessary component in establishing value, but for a mint condition example in today's market, the likely sale price will be under $100 regardless of size. As for a date of manufacture, this stein was initially produced in the early 1880s, but your example may have been manufactured at almost any point up to the start of WWI. Information on the story of William Tell is contained on any number of Internet sites, so if that's the type of "background" you're seeking you shouldn't have much problem finding it elsewhere.
