Probably it has no actual connection to the Spanish saint; but, in the 16th century both Spain and Germany were part of the Holy Roman Empire under Charles V. This high point of the HRE seems never to have been forgotten by the Germans, and Charles V and his coat of arms still show up on steins. It confuses some people because the coat of arms is mostly Spanish (the castles and lions of Castile and Leon).
