Many things go into the value of a stein, or for that matter any collected item. On any given day there may or may not be a lot of interest to generate a lot of bidding activity; the seller may not know what they have and may offer a item for much less than the value and if you are lucky and happen to walk in at the right time you get a good buy on a much more valuable item. I ran into a guy who bought a Mettlach stein at a garage sale for $1.00 that he sold on Ebay for $4000.00. Does that mean the stein was only worth $1.00 or was it worth less than $4000.00? Many a rare stein, automobile or whatever has been purchased for pennies on the dollar but that doesn't necessarily mean it is only worth what it was purchased for.
