Although a heck of a lot of this type of stein were made, which keeps the prices minimal, there is still stuff to be learned by examining it. The date of 1963 is entirely believable because it is a typical example of the souvenir steins made from the mid 1950's through the 1970's or so. Look at the lid and thumblift. That decorative pattern and the spin marks on the inside are typical, as is the thumblift design. The weight and feel of it, since it is a Gerz, will give you a good idea about what the German steins, even cheaper ones, feel like compared to the really cheap Japanese ones of the period (the Japanese were much lighter, almost like big tea cups). The decoration is overused, but probably can be traced to one of the genre paintings of the 19th century, they didn't hire new artists or commission new works. Usually it is a copy of a copy of a stein derived from a painting. Another thing, you can drink out of it without being paranoid. And note that it is nearly 50 years old, even if most stein collectors don't care some people are interested in that alone.
