This is model number 2026 designed by Richard Riemerschmid for Reinhold Merkelbach. "Gaudeamus igitur" are the first two words of the Latin lyrics of the most famous German student song, "De Brevitate Vitae" (the shortness of life). The song reflects on all the positive things in this life, but also points out that all too soon we all return to dust.
