What I would like to determine is whether the Trompeter steins were made because of the popularity of the poem or the opera. The poem by von Scheffel is from 1855 and is still well known. The opera by Nessler is from 1884 and was a huge hit for years, but disappeared from the repertory around WW1. The most famous song from the opera is the only one still popular, and it's "Behut dich Gott es war so schon gewesen." so frequently quoted on steins, and taken from the poem. The opera was written with permission from Von Scheffel; but, the librettist massacred the story to the extent that von Scheffel walked out in the middle of the second act when he went to hear it.
