My question would be solved if there are Trompeter steins from before 1884. But the SCI article identifies engravings resembling the steins from 1888. The engravings look more like they are illustrating the poem. On the other hand, there is a lot of beer drinking, student songs, etc in the opera. I have seen no depictions of the staging of the opera. Did the popularity of each support the other? It's easier for me to imagine steins based on a popular opera than a poem; but, I'm not a 19th century German. Would anyone like to offer opinions?
