It doesn't precisely make sense. The first few are from the earliest folk song version and are idioms rather than literal. After that the lines are rhyming pairs, and sometimes there is humor intended by the juxtaposition. You really have to be there, singing and drinking beer. There have been many versions over the years; mostly keeping the first few verses and changing a few of the others. But, the one on the Thewalt and American Bravo steins are by far the most popular. That version dates from the 1890's.
