The way I got the $3000 current value is derived from the fact that a reserve bid of $3200 (80% of the low auction estimate, $4000) could have bought the stein in either of Kirsner's auctions in 2006- and that was when the stock market was at hitting all time highs on a regular basis and the economy was still thought to be booming. To me the value of this stein seems like it has to be lower now than it was at the end of 2006.
