I've never pondered this question before, but here are my thoughts. I think a glaze skip or miss would show clearly defined edges, whereas the edges of a "rub" would tend to be more feathered. If the glaze is glossy, you would also expect a "rub" to show more of a mat finish. But at the end of the day, if you can't tell, then it can't matter all that much.
