"Squeezing" won't work - once the strap has been stretched, it won't go back to its original shape and size. If the strap conforms well to the shape and size of the handle (thought loose), the easiest thing it to apply some Super Glue such that it flows into the space between handle and strap. This is generally invisible. If the strap is more deformed than that, you can insert a small shim (thin piece of cardboard, toothpick, etc.) which will stabilize the lid, although it is not very aesthetic.
