You're headed in a direction that I can't offer any advice about. With a gap as large as you describe the lid is probably pretty unstable. Oftentimes we see stretched straps which actually allow the entire assembly to slip down the length of the handle! The "right" way to fix it is to have the strap repoured by a competent pewtersmith.
