Yes, I would describe the lid assembly as being unstable although it's not so bad that it slides down the entire length of the handle. I can move it a little less than half an inch back and forth and about the same side to side. I did send Mr. Harr an e-mail asking his opinion/advice but he hasn't responded and may not respond at all since I indicated that it would be unlikely that I would retain his professional services. His fees begin at $50.00 and then there's insured postage both ways to consider. I only paid about $35.00 total for the stein so I can't see spending what may eventually amount to twice that to have this very minor repair done. If anyone reading this thread knows of another pewtersmith in the Washington D.C. or Northern Virginia area, please let me know. If there's an alternative to Mr. Harr in my area, an apprentice or someone whose fees are a little more within my means, I might be able to get my little stein repaired without sinking more money into it than it's worth. I'm not suggesting that Mr. Harr's rates are unreasonable but he's obviously an artisan, skilled at complex restorations. My little stein doesn't require that. I just need someone capable of slapping a new strap on it. If anyone can help with information or suggestions, I'd be very grateful. One more thing, if I'm underestimating my steins value and an expert here would like to suggest that it's worth engaging Mr. Harr's expertise than by all means, let me know. I really doubt that my stein is worth more than I paid (for all I know, I paid too much for it) but I must admit to being a very novice collector and would be thrilled to learn that its value warrants the kind of quality restoration that Mr. Harr could provide.
