Crazy appraisers? Not really, just ignorant of the stein market (and of steins, for that matter). The only thing many of them know is that Mettlach steins have been known to sell for high prices. And besides, if the appraiser gives a low valuation, the owner won't be happy. Much better to tell someone that they possess a rare and valuable "boy with turnips" stein whose head rotates ("I've never seen on like this before!") than to tell them that their stein is not rare, and that damage considerably reduces its appeal - and its value. Leave 'em with a smile on their face. Assuming this was a free appraisal, it is worth exactly what they paid for it - nothing. And if it was a paid appraisal (with fee based upon a percentage of the appraised value, perhaps?), shame on both parties.
