This stein is known from only two examples. Mike Wald, nor myself , were aware of this design until one turned up in ivory stoneware about 4 years ago with the model number of 601. Although this stein is marked HR, it was made by A. J. Thewalt after 1898. The salt glaze piece is the second piece of this design to surface and is numbered 189 and was made in Freising between 1882 and 1886. It was the habit of the Freising factory, when a design was dropped from production, to reuse the newly available model number. For this reason, you find a salt glaze model number used again, on another salt glaze piece of differing design, or on a porcelain stein after 1886, when salt glaze production ended at Freising. The stein is very rare in either salt glaze or ivory stoneware.
