Generally speaking there are two types of hinge commonly known as "closed" or "open" hinges. Both are seen with either three or five rings. The oldest hinges are closed five ring hinges, used until ca.1860-70. At that time the open three ring hinge came into vogue and was used until about 1895, when the open five ring hinge came inot use. There are exceptions because some pewterers continued to use the closed five ring hinge for some time. Bruder Thannhauser used the closed five ring hinge throughout on their better work. "Closed" means the hinge pin is not visible because both sides of the hinge are sealed. "open" means you can see the hinge pin on either side.
