Regarding the modern porcelain stein marked as "Mettlach", what terminology is most appropriate? We all know that it was not made by the Villeroy & Boch factory at Mettlach, and it bears no resemblance to any true Mettlach. Is it a fake, intended to deceive, also known as a fraud? Consider that almost all of the V&B Mettlach marks include reference to the parent company (Villeroy & Boch), the mark on this stein does not. Consider also that there are glass steins, made in the city of Mettlach, with that name in raised letters on the base rim. No one considers those pieces to be frauds, as they are not misrepresented. So where was this porcelain stein manufactured? In Mettlach, perhaps? Of course, none of this line of questioning in any way excuses an eBay seller who hypes such a stein as a "valuable Mettlach."
