Another possibility is that the stein was brought from Germany and decorated by a German American in America. Either way, it is interesting to recall that during that period Germany was emphasizing German American friendship and trying to encourage the large German immigrant population to lobby for pro-German foreign policy. In particular, Germany hoped that the US could be persuaded to support their side, or at least remain neutral, in the coming war. In the event, any pro-German feeling was overwhelmed by the unacceptable German policies, in particular the invasion of Belgium.
