All I can tell you is that I have an old stein from my grandparents and it sat in a window sill for years and got cold and got hot, etc. It now has quite a bit of "crazing" to it (fine numerous small cracks in the glaze--kinda like spider webs). I have seen this in steins that people have put in the dishwasher a lot too. It probably depends a lot on the quality of the glaze too.
