That article was about Mettlach etched steins. Someone (apologies to the author for forgetting who off the top of my head) took some of his broken pieces of etched Mettlach steins and put them on the roof on his house and let the elements get at them for a long time - baking sun, ice, etc. - with no discernible harm to the color or sharpness of the outlines. Can't extraplolate to other steins! Whatever happened, if anything, it is done. I'd just remove them from any extremes in the future.
