Charlie Birger gave Val the stein because "some of these guys might put a shot through it sometime." Val passed it on to my father, Curt Small, who was the son of the Saline County Sheriff. Birger was not a stein collector. I strongly suspect the stein was stolen from one of the big German estates in St. Louis, but that is only my personal opinion.
