I have a Mettlach cameo type stein that has a stoneware insert in the lid and I've noticed that some of the pewter has flaked on the lid rim. Did Mettlach use a treatment to darken the pewter that actually was some sort of coating? I don't have any reason to believe the stein was ever tampered with as all the pewter the same. Is this "coating" maybe the oxidation that occurs over the years? I have not seen anything like this on any of my other steins.
