There is speculation that "climate" can affect pewter; but this may only be true in extreme conditions. You can try to polish the pewter with an appropriate metal polish. But depending upon the "corrosion," it may be difficult to eliminate all of it. I had a Mettlach with a similar problem, and the polishing helped...to an extent.
