Johnathan, The Library section of this site lists some basic marks. If you belong to SCI, you can access the Stein Manufacturer's Marks in the Library section. The mark you describe sounds like the one used by Hachiya Bros, a japanese firm. This mark will be in the second listing I mentioned above. This mark is a shield with a standing lion on the left and a standing griffin on the right. The shield features a pretzel and a pretzel also appears above the crown on the top of the shield. Japanese steins usually have the lids attached with what looks like bolts or screws versus the pin used by German manufacturers. Japanese pottery is usually lighter that German pottery.
