Ken, I would do nothing to the stein. It's value primarily is in the body, the porcelain insert lid a distant second, and the pewter rim is way, way back a far distant third. Since Mettlachs are dated,you know how long it took for the patina to develop. I think a "chemical patina" would hurt the value far more than spots or flakes put there by time and nature. Having the rim replaced with a Mettlach original would be a better alternative.
