I continue to search for information on
Thewalt 243 and its subject. Recently I finally found an auction record and photo of the
original (click to view image from TSACO auction of July 3, 2007, lot 2012),
which provides additional clues.
It was hard to find because the listing did not say Thewalt and had the name of the Prince wrong!
I'm hoping someone will volunteer their thoughts.
As described in that auction: "Pottery stein, .5L, relief, marked 243,
Meteor, Präs. Roosevelt & Prinz Friedrich, pewter lid, mint (250-350)"
One clue regarding the shamrocks is that on the original they are not green but rather gold, which supports one of my three hypotheses. But it's the price I'd like to ask about. The auctioneer estimated $250-350 and it sold for $460. What does that say about the number of steins made? I'm guessing that the price is too low for just a few presentation steins to have been made, but too high for a large number of steins having been made for propaganda? Any thoughts?
